- Greetings! Salutation! In this class we will be exploring the different elements, genres, and careers in music. As we explore the different styles, cultures, and genres of music, we will be actively involved in music by performing and singing, composing and songwriting, dancing and listening, discussing and writing.
Why Study Music?
- INTERDISCIPLINARY - Music, believe it or not, spans across many academic subjects, including foreign language, science, language arts, history, and math.
- EXPRESSION - Music is a way for people to express themselves in ways words alone cannot. We will be learning about how composers and songwriters from the past and present have used to music to express their own personal story and have used music to rebel secretly.
- CAREERS - I believe it is important for young scholars to explore as many different career options as possible. Throughout this course, we will be exploring the different roles involved with creating music (even if you can’t sing or play an instrument!)

Classroom Expectations
As the year goes on we will be composing, performing, and (of course) listening to many different styles of music. Before we begin, I just wanted to be clear on the expectations I have for you all and for myself in the classroom.
- When you come into the classroom, it is expected that you quietly find your seat, take out your notebooks/binders and any assignments to be collected, and start working on the Do-Now. You will receive two warnings if you are heard talking. After that it is minus five points off your participation grade.
- You can expect me to stand at the door during transitions passing out the Do Now handout. If you did not receive a handout on your way in for class, please walk over to me and ask for the handout.
- The Do Now will always be written on the sideboard as well.
- You are expected to be in your assigned seat when attendance is taken. You can expect me to take attendance at the beginning of the period. If you are not in your seat, you will not be marked as present.
- If you need me to change your seat, talk to me at the end of the period.
- When the teacher or a scholar volunteer is speaking or leading an activity (like a listening clip, giving instructions for a game or independent activity, etc.), the class is expected to listen to the teacher.
- Listening means your eyes are on the speaker and you are not talking while the speaker is talking.
- During independent or group activities, quietly talking to scholars next to you is permitted (except for during assessments). HOWEVER, talking to people across the room is disruptive to other scholars’ learning and will not be tolerated.
- You can expect me to give two (2) warnings to the class if the talking becomes too disruptive. After two warnings, the activity must be completed silently.
- During a performance, listening activity, or presentation, scholars are expected to behave as model audience members. That means:
- Scholars will quietly listen to the performance or presentation from their assigned seats, keeping their comments to themselves or writing them down in their notebooks to address later
- Remember the 2 bathroom pass per period policy. It is up to you all to work as a class to come up with a system of who gets to use the pass.
- Remember the school policy states there is no food or drink (including water) allowed in the classroom.
- Not complying with these behavior expectation (ex: visiting other teachers with the bathroom pass, talking during a performance, etc) will result in a disciplinary action according to the teacher’s discretion.
New Students
Students who have been added to the course in the middle of a unit will be expected get notes from previous classes either from fellow classmates or asking the teacher.
